Privacy policy
What this website does with your information — and what it does not do, which is most of it.
The short version
- This website does not collect personal information.
- It sets no cookies and uses no analytics. See the cookies page.
- The contact form does not send or store anything. It hands the message to your own email program, and you send it yourself.
- If you do email us, we hold that email and use it to answer you and to work on your case.
1. Information this website collects
None. There is no account to create, nothing to sign up for, no newsletter, and no form that transmits data to a server. The site runs entirely in your browser. What you type into the contact form stays on your device until you choose to send it as an email.
2. Server logs
The website is served from ordinary web hosting, and like almost every web server, that hosting keeps an access log. Those logs record requests — which page was asked for, when, and from which IP address — and they exist for security and fault-finding.
We do not use those logs to identify anyone, to build profiles, or to analyse how the site is used. If you want to know how long the hosting provider keeps them, write to us and we will find out for you.
3. If you email us
When you send us an email, we receive your email address, whatever you write, and any files you attach. We use it to reply to you, and — if you are asking us to help with a property — to work on that case.
Please think before sending documents by email. Identity documents, death certificates and title deeds are exactly what we need to see, but email is not a private channel. If you would rather not send them, bring them to the office and we will make the copies we need there.
4. Case files
If the Centre takes on your case, we open a file for it. That file contains the documents and correspondence needed to do the work: your contact details, the property details, and the record of what has been done at each stage.
Case files are kept because the work is not finished when a transfer is registered — they are also the evidence behind the Centre's published research. Where case material is used for research, reporting or teaching, it is anonymised: names and identifying details are removed, and no household is identifiable from what we publish.
We do not sell personal information, and we do not share it with anyone for marketing. It is shared with other people only where that is necessary to progress your case — a conveyancer, a municipal office, the deeds registry — or where the law requires it.
5. Your rights
South Africa's Protection of Personal Information Act gives you the right to:
- ask what personal information we hold about you, and get a copy of it;
- ask us to correct anything that is wrong or out of date;
- ask us to delete information we no longer have a reason to keep;
- object to how we are using it;
- complain to the Information Regulator.
To exercise any of these, write to either of the addresses on the contact page and say what you would like us to do. We will respond within a reasonable time, and we will tell you if there is a reason we cannot do what you have asked.
If you are not satisfied with our response, you can take the matter to the Information Regulator of South Africa (external site), which oversees compliance with the Act.
6. Who is responsible
The Tenure Support Centre operates as a joint initiative of the Centre for Affordable Housing Finance in Africa (CAHF) and 71point4, and works from the FNB Khayelitsha Mall in Cape Town.
If you need to know which of the two partners is the responsible party for information you have given us, or you need a formal address for a legal notice, write to us and we will give you the answer in writing.
7. Children
Title deed problems are often about family property, and a case may involve children as heirs. We do not knowingly collect information about a child except where it is needed to transfer a property to them, and in that case it is handled as part of the case file by the adults acting for them.
8. Changes to this policy
If this policy changes, the date at the foot of this page changes with it. If the change is significant — for example, if analytics were ever added to this site — it would also be described on the cookies page, because that is the page the change would affect.
